To move nearer from all directions, often used for people or things coming toward something to surround or approach it. It can describe an enemy army, darkness, crowds, or bad weather getting closer.
Usage & Nuances
Usually used in descriptions of threats ('the army closed in'), or physical surroundings ('the fog closed in'). Not generally used for people approaching in a friendly way. Common with weather, darkness, crowds, or enemy forces. Often followed by 'on' (close in on).
