つむじ風は地面を高速で回転しながら移動する風の柱です。また、速く激しい出来事や感情を表す時にも使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

比喩的にもよく使われ、「a whirlwind romance」（急速な恋愛）、「a whirlwind of activity」（目まぐるしい活動）のように、短期間で激しく動くことを強調します。通常、大きな竜巻には使われません。
