아무것도 자라지 않는, 사용되지 않거나 파괴되어 버려진 땅을 뜻합니다. 비유적으로도 활기나 생기가 없는 곳이나 상황에 사용됩니다.

'황무지'는 완전히 버려진 땅이나 환경 파괴가 심한 곳, 혹은 메마른 문화나 감정을 비유적으로 나타낼 때 자주 쓰입니다. 그냥 빈 땅에는 잘 사용하지 않습니다.
