Definition

非常に古く文学的な語で、「〜へ」「〜まで」という意味。宗教的な文献や歴史書、詩的・格式ばった表現で使われます。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

現代日本語では通常「へ」「まで」と言い換えますが、「unto this day」や「do unto others」など宗教的・古風な表現で使われます。日常会話では使いません。

Examples

The letter was sent unto the king.

その手紙は王**へ**送られた。

Stay here unto morning.

ここに**朝まで**いなさい。

She spoke kindly unto them.

彼女は彼ら**に**優しく話しかけた。

He was joking when he said, “I bring this gift unto you.”

彼が「この贈り物をあなた**へ**持ってきました」と言ったとき、それは冗談だった。

That saying, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you,” is still famous.

「自分にしてほしいことを他人**に**もしなさい」という格言はいまだによく知られている。

People don’t really say unto anymore unless they want to sound biblical or dramatic.

今では、聖書的または劇的にしたい時以外「**unto**」は使われません。
