它用來表示兩個人、事物或情況彼此不同。它可以作介詞,放在名詞或代詞前;較少見時也可作形容詞,表示「不同於平常的」.

它最常見於 'unlike me'、'unlike the last time'、'unlike his brother' 這類結構。'unlike' 後面通常接名詞、代詞或名詞片語,不直接接完整子句。不要和 'dislike' 混淆,後者表示「不喜歡」.
