何かのすぐ下や覆われている位置にあること。表面上は見えない本当の気持ちなどを指すこともある。

「underneath the bed」のような前置詞や、「The shoes are underneath」のような副詞として使う。'under'よりも強調的で、生き生きした印象。比喩的な使い方もあり。

The cat is underneath the table.

猫はテーブルの**下に**いる。

I found my keys underneath the sofa.

私はカギをソファの**下で**見つけた。
