昔の言葉で、特に結婚で忠実であることや約束を意味します。また、誠実さや忠誠という意味もあります。

現在はほとんど使われず、詩や古典文学、歴史的な結婚の誓いの場面で見かけます。「plight my troth」のような表現は儀式的です。
