일부러 누군가에게 극심한 신체적 또는 정신적 고통을 주는 행위나 방법. 주로 벌, 심문, 혹은 강요를 목적으로 한다. 때로는 비유적으로도 사용된다.

'고문'은 정식, 공식적인 맥락(인권, 역사, 법률 등)에서 주로 사용합니다. 신체적, 심리적 고통 모두를 의미하며, 비유적으로도 씁니다. 단수 '고문'이 더 자주 쓰입니다.
