কিছু শক্ত করে ধরা বা নিরাপদ করা বা নিয়ম-নীতি আরও কঠোর করা বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।

শারীরিক বিষয় ('বেল্ট কষে ধরা') এবং নিয়ম/নীতিমালায় ('নিয়ম কড়াকড়ি করা') দুই ক্ষেত্রেই ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন 'tightening regulations' বলতে নিয়ম আরও কঠিন করা বোঝায়।
