가시나 뾰족한 것이 붙어 있는 상태를 말한다. 또한 해결하기 어려운 문제나 상황을 뜻하기도 한다.

식물의 실제 가시와 문제의 '난해함'에 모두 사용된다. 주로 글이나 공식적인 상황에서 'thorny problem', 'thorny issue' 식으로 쓴다.

The rose bush is very thorny.
