論文は、主に修士や博士など学位を取得するために執筆する長い研究論文です。また、議論やエッセイの中での中心となる主張も指します。

主に学術的な場面で「論文」として使われ、「論文を書く」「論文を提出する」などで用います。「thesis statement」とはエッセイの主張部分です。「エッセイ」（小論文）とは異なるので注意しましょう。
