「Tenement」指的是被劃分為許多小公寓的老舊住宅樓，通常狀況較差，很多低收入家庭居住其中。過去在大城市裡很常見，經常過於擁擠且缺乏維護。

“Tenement”主要指美國和英國1890–1920年代城市裡窮人、移民住的舊公寓樓，與過度擁擠、條件差相聯繫。現代新式公寓不稱為tenement，主要出現在歷史、文學或社會語境中。
