“Tenement”指的是被划分成许多小公寓的老旧住宅楼，通常状况较差，许多收入较低的家庭住在里面。过去在大城市里很常见，经常过于拥挤且维护不好。

“Tenement”主要指美国和英国1890-1920年代城市里穷人、移民住的旧公寓楼，和过度拥挤、条件差联系紧密。现代新式公寓不叫tenement，主要出现在历史、文学或社会背景中。
