アメリカでは学校や警察のトップ、または建物の管理人を指します。イギリスや英連邦では主に警察や上級職員の役職として使われます。'school superintendent'（教育委員長）、'building superintendent'（管理人）などの表現があります。'principal'（校長）と混同しないでください。
