数を足したときに出る合計や、金額としての総額、または何かのすべてを合わせた結果を表します。

数学では「the sum of 3 and 4」のように使います。日常会話では「a large sum of money」のように金額にもよく使います。「the sum of」は全体の結果を指すこともあります。「sum up」と混同しないよう注意。
