自分自身の命を意図的に絶つ行為のこと。また、自分にとって非常に不利な行動や決断を比喩的に表す際にも使われます。

非常にセンシティブな単語です。直接的には「自殺する」や「自殺予防」など、配慮のある文脈で用いることが大切です。「キャリア自殺」「政治的自殺」など比喩的にも使われます。
