Şehirlerde yerin altında çalışan tren sistemi, toplu taşıma amacıyla kullanılır. Genellikle Amerika’da tren sistemi kastedilir.

Amerikan İngilizcesi'nde 'subway' genellikle yeraltı treni için kullanılır. İngiltere'de ise 'underground' veya 'tube' tercih edilir. Sık kullanılan ifadeler: 'subway station', 'subway line', 'take the subway'.
