都市の中心から離れた住宅地で、通常は一戸建てに住む人が多く、都市部より静かで人口密度が低い地域です。

単数で『郊外』、複数の意味で『郊外地域』とも使われます。都市中心部（都市部）や田舎（農村）と混同しないように注意。家族向けや静かな地域を指します。
