人や物事を力で支配したり、感情や反応など強いものを抑えたりすること。

ややフォーマル・文語的な表現。'subdue anger'（怒りを抑える）、'subdue a suspect'（容疑者を制圧する）、'subdue the fire'（火を鎮圧する）のように、抵抗のあるものを抑える場合に多く使われます。
