Definition

主に家や飼い主のいない猫や犬などの動物を指しますが、人や物が本来いるべき場所から離れてしまう場合にも使います。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

複数形では動物、特に野良猫や野良犬に最もよく使われます。まれに迷子の人や物にも使うことがあります。「stray dog」「stray cat」「feed the strays」のフレーズでよく使います。
