「straits」とは、二つの大きな水域をつなぐ狭い水路、または困難な状況のことです。

地理的には「strait」として使われますが、「straits」の複数形は困難な状況（例：'in dire straits'＝深刻な苦境）でよく使われます。「straight」（まっすぐ）と間違えないように注意してください。
