地面や建築などで見られる固い石のかけら。「石」は素材全体も指すが、「石」は個々のピースの意味が強い。

ふつう数えられる名詞：「a stone」「three stones」。小さい丸石は「小石」「pebble」と区別。文学的や固定表現に「石」を使うが、日常会話では「石ころ」も自然。
