यह एक चिकित्सीय और शरीर रचना का शब्द है, आम बातचीत में कम ही उपयोग होता है। मुख्यतः स्वास्थ्य या जीवविज्ञान में प्रयुक्त होता है। कभी-कभी इसे 'सीने की हड्डी' भी कहते हैं। 'कठोर' (सख्त) शब्द से भ्रमित न करें।
