「Stead」は、誰かや何かの「代わり」や「役割」を意味し、特に代理で何かをするときに使われます。「in someone's stead」という表現で用いられることがほとんどです。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

とてもフォーマルまたは古風な表現で、ほぼ必ず「in (someone's) stead」の形で使います。日常会話ではほとんど使われません。'stead' を単独や動詞として使わないよう注意してください。
