予期しない音や動きで誰かを急に驚かせたり、びっくりさせること。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

たいてい受け身『be startled by』や使役『startle someone』で使う。短くて鋭い驚きに使い、小さな驚きや長期的な恐怖には使わない。

Examples

The loud noise startled the baby.

大きな音で赤ちゃんが**驚いた**。

I didn't mean to startle you.
