幽霊や亡霊のこと。また、恐怖や不安の原因となるものを比喩的に指すこともある。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

一般的に『幽霊』よりも文学的・フォーマルな表現。比喩的に使う場合は「戦争の恐怖（the spectre of war）」などと表現される。日常会話ではあまり聞かれない。
