煤（すす）

Definition

すすは木や石炭、石油などが燃えるときに出る黒くて細かい粉やうろこ状のものです。主に煙突や暖炉の近くの壁などにたまります。

「すす」は数えられない物質名詞で、主に家庭や技術的な場面で使います。「chimney」「fireplace」「clean off」と一緒に使うことが多いです。「灰（はい）」とは区別してください。

The fireplace was covered in soot.

暖炉は**すす**で覆われていた。
