어떤 물질을 표면에 지저분하게 바르거나, 거짓 또는 부당한 말을 해서 누군가의 명예를 훼손하는 것.

'Smear'는 의도적으로 바르거나 (예: butter, cream) 또는 의도적으로 비방하는 경우(예: smear campaign)에 사용됨. 'Smudge'(우발적 얼룩)와 구별.
