物質を表面に乱雑に塗ること、または誰かの評判を偽りや不公平な発言で傷つけること。

「smear」は、故意に何かを塗りつける動作や、評判を落とす行為で使う（例：smear campaign）。「smudge」は通常、偶発的な汚れに使う。
