目を閉じて体を休めている状態や、何かが睡眠中であることを表します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

「is sleeping」のような進行形や「寝ている赤ちゃん」「寝袋」のような名詞の前で使われます。「asleep」とはニュアンスが異なり、「asleep」は通常名詞の前にはつかいません。
