어떤 것에서 찢거나 잘라낸 작은 얇은 조각. 동사로는 무엇인가를 잘게 찢거나 잘라내는 것을 의미함.

'a shred of paper'는 아주 작은 종이 조각을 뜻함. 'to shred documents'는 문서를 잘게 찢다 또는 파쇄기를 이용해 없애는 의미. 'not a shred of evidence'는 전혀 증거가 없음을 강조할 때 사용함.
