Definition

足かせは、両手や足をつなぎ動きを制限する金属製のくさりや留め具です。比喩的に、自由を妨げるものも指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

多くは複数形で使います。法律や歴史、文学表現、また比喩表現にも多いです。'to break free from one's shackles'は束縛から解放されるという意味でよく使われます。現代の手錠や、単なる鎖とは区別されます。
