매우 크고 날카로우며 불쾌한 소리를 내는 것. 사람이나 동물의 갑작스런 외침, 또는 타이어나 브레이크 등 기계의 날카로운 소리를 의미한다.

갑작스럽고 거슬리는 날카로운 소리를 나타낼 때 씀. 'screeching tires', 'screech to a halt', 'screech owl' 같은 표현이 자주 쓰임.
