簡短且廣為人知的語句，用來表達普遍真理、規則或建議。這些通常會在文化中代代相傳。

“Sayings”通常以複數形式出現，強調傳統智慧，多用於“old”、“famous”等。如“Chinese sayings”。並非所有“sayings”都是教訓意義的proverbs，部分僅是觀察性陳述。
