相手に敬意を表し、特に軍隊で手を頭に当てる公式な動作。転じて、誰かや何かを公に称賛・敬意を表す意味もある。

動詞と名詞の両方で使われる。軍隊では文字通り、日常では功績や勇気などを称賛するニュアンスが強い。'salute the flag'なら『国旗に敬礼する』意味。
