Definition

崩れたり壊れたりした古い建物や都市などの残骸、特に歴史的なものを指します。

「遺跡」は特に歴史的・古代の残骸に使います。普通のゴミや壊れた家具には使いません。「古代遺跡」や「ローマ遺跡」という表現が一般的です。

We visited the ancient ruins last summer.
