Definition

手などで物の表面を前後や円を描くように動かして、きれいにしたり、温めたり、安心させたりすること。また、テクスチャーの上に紙を置き、鉛筆でこすって絵をうつし取る技法も指します。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

'Rubbing'は主に手のひら全体で動かす意味（例：'rubbing your eyes'）ですが、アート技法として使われることもあります。'Rubbing alcohol'は消毒用アルコール。'rubbing shoulders'は人と親しく交わること。'scratching'（爪を使う）とは異なります。
