'ropes'는 'rope'(단수)의 복수형. 'jump rope'(줄넘기), 'climbing rope'(등반용 밧줄) 등과 함께 자주 쓰인다. 'learn the ropes'는 일의 요령을 익히다는 뜻. 얇은 '줄'(string)이나 '실'(thread)과 구분해야 한다.
