場所や状況から後ろに下がることや撤退すること。多くの場合、危険を避けたり敗北した後に使われます。

主に軍事や対立などの状況で使われますが、比喩的にも（例：'retreating from a conversation'）使われることがあります。'from'や'to'などの前置詞とよく一緒に使われます。
