書かれた言葉を見て、その意味を理解すること。また、文章や情報の解釈を指す場合もあります。

多くの場合、行為や能力として使われます（例：'reading books'、'reading skills'）。'a reading of the law'のように解釈の意味がある場合も。形容詞用法（例：'reading lamp'）とは混同しないようにしましょう。
