'Rather' pode significar 'um pouco', 'bastante', ou expressar preferência por algo em vez de outra coisa.

Usado para dar ênfase suave ('rather cold'), corrigir educadamente ('não é azul, mas sim verde') e mostrar preferência ('I'd rather stay home'). É mais formal (ou britânico) que 'pretty' ou 'kind of'. Coloca-se antes de adjetivos/advérbios, e na expressão 'would rather' para preferências.
