自由に出られないように牢屋や施設に拘束されている人のこと。犯罪や戦争に関係している場合が多いです。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

犯罪で捕まった人や戦争で捕虜になった人に使われます。「inmate」は刑務所内の同房者を指し、「captive」は広い意味で使います。「政治犯（political prisoner）」「戦争捕虜（prisoner of war）」などの表現もあります。
