原則とは、人の考え方や行動、理解を導く基本的なルールや考え方、信念です。道徳的な価値観や、システムの根本的な仕組みを指すこともあります。

フォーマルな場面や学問、道徳的な文脈でよく使われます。「basic principle」「guiding principle」「in principle」「a matter of principle」などのパターンで使われます。「principal」と混同しないように注意しましょう。

Honesty is an important principle in our family.
