Definition

本当ではないことを本当のようにふるまったり、想像したり、だましたりすること。うそをつく、という意味も含む。

Usage Notes (Japanese)

『pretend to + 動詞』『pretend that + 文』の形でよく使う。子どものごっこ遊び（『医者のふりをする』）や、あえて本心と違う態度（『関心があるふりをする』）でも使われる。「intend（つもり）」とは違うので注意。

Examples

The children pretend they are pirates.

子どもたちは自分たちが海賊だと**ふりをする**。

She pretended to be asleep.
