완전히 증명되지 않았지만 가능성이 높다고 생각하여 사실로 받아들이는 것. 격식 있는 상황에서는 반대 증거가 나오기 전까지 사실로 여기는 의미도 있다.

'presume'은 'guess'보다 공식적이고, 'assume' 또는 'suppose'와 비슷하게 근거 있는 추측에 사용됨. 'presume that...', 'be presumed to be...', 'I presume...' 같은 표현이 많으며, 법률에서는 'presumed innocent'가 쓰임.
