'পূর্ববর্তী' শব্দটি আনুষ্ঠানিক এবং লেখ্য বা একাডেমিক প্রসঙ্গে বেশি ব্যবহৃত হয়। "preceding page", "preceding year" ইত্যাদি বাক্যে প্রায়ই দেখা যায়। 'Previous' এর চেয়ে আরো নির্দিষ্টভাবে ঠিক ইতিপূর্বের কিছু বোঝাতে ব্যবহৃত হয়।
