建物の大きな入り口や門を指します。また、多くの情報やサービスへ案内するウェブサイトも「ポータル」と呼びます。

IT分野では「ポータルサイト」として使われ、「web portal」は多機能なウェブページを指します。建物の入口として使うとややフォーマルな響きです。ファンタジー等の「異世界への扉」と区別しましょう。
