広くて平らで木が少なく、多くは草で覆われている大地で、主に大陸の中央部に見られます。

固有名詞や地理的な地域を指す場合は複数形に注意（例：'Great Plains'＝グレートプレーンズ）。飛行機（planes）と混同しないように！風景や地理の話でよく使われます。
