足で踏んで自転車や車、ピアノなどの機械や楽器を操作するための平らな部分。また、特に自転車をこぐ動作を表す動詞としても使われます。

自転車、ピアノ、車（アクセルやブレーキペダル）などによく使われます。動詞では主に自転車をこぐ意味。'petal'（花びら）と混同しないよう注意。
