Definition

도시 또는 마을의 중심에서 떨어진 바깥 부분, 보통 덜 개발된 지역을 의미한다.

'outskirts'는 항상 복수형으로 광범위한 지역을 가리키며, 특정 지점을 뜻하지 않는다. 'the outskirts of town', 'live on the outskirts' 같은 표현에 자주 쓰인다. 중심 도시에는 사용하지 않는다.

Many people live on the outskirts of the city.

많은 사람들이 도시 **외곽**에 산다.

There is a new shopping mall on the outskirts.
